Maya and the Fog is told by five-year-old Maya, with her eight-year-old brother Leo heckling from beside her. At home there’s Mom and Moose the dog. When the fog reaches school, Maya’s friends and her teacher join the story.

Her big brother. Has an explanation for everything. It’s always physics, and it’s always wrong in a way that’s technically right.
I’m the one who’s right.

Never sees the monster. Always finds the evidence in the morning.
I don’t see the monsters. I see the evidence.

the dog · golden retriever
Asleep for the scary part, barking at the safe part, and the only one who looks straight at the monster. He wags at it.

age 5 · the best friend · said “Bee”
Fearless in the wrong direction. Volunteers to touch it, then names it something cute.
I am not scared of anything.

age 5 · the careful one · said “Ah-shee”
Makes lists out loud and says we should tell a grown-up. She is usually right. Nobody listens.
I usually say the right thing first, and nobody listens.

age 5 · the odd one
Notices what nobody else noticed. Never scared, because it hasn’t occurred to her to be.
There’s one behind you right now. It’s just a coat. Probably.

age 8 · the believer · “Luke” to Leo
Leo’s best friend. He has read a book about it, and he is thrilled.
I read a book about everything. Page nine is very true.

age 8 · the older kid
The tallest kid at school. Somebody told her she’s the grown-up now. One earbud in, never both.
I’m the grown-up, apparently. Fantastic.

age 5, barely · the littlest
The smallest person in every picture. Carries a dinosaur whose name we haven’t heard yet.
Can I have the gold marker? Please?

the teacher · kindergarten
Maya’s teacher. Warm, unflappable, and never quite in the room when it matters.
I teach kindergarten, which means I am never, ever surprised.
